في محاولة لإثبات الذات يبدأ ضابطا شرطة حديثا التخرج عملهما، ويتقمصان شخصية مراهقين فى إحدى المدارس الثانوية، كي يكشفا أطراف الجريمة، ومروجي المخدرات المسيطرين على المدرسة، وينتج عن ذلك العديد من المواقف الكوميدية.

الفيلم الأول في السلسلة الشهيرة (السلاح المميت)، حول الشرطيين (روجر) الشرطي الأسمر الذي يقترب من الخمسين، ويشعر بالاكتئاب بسبب أزمة منتصف العمر، و(مارتن) الذي يعاني من ميول انتحارية، لوفاة زوجته في حادث مروري، ويسبب عديدا من المشاكل في إدارة المخدرات؛ مما دفع زملاؤه لنقله إلى إدارة القتل مع (روجر)، يذهبان للتحقيق في قضية انتحار (أماندا) ابنة صديق (روجر)، يبدو تنافر الشرطيين واضحاً، لكن مع مرور الوقت تتوطد علاقتهما.

يلتقي مارتن ريجز أخيرًا بنصفه الآخر كول لورنا، شرطية جميلة ولكن قوية، جنبًا إلى جنب مع روجر مورتاف شريكه، ويحاولون الكشف عن شرطي سابق وتهريب أسلحة ضخمة، يحبطهم الشرطي الملتوي جاك ترافيس في كل منعطف، وذلك عن طريق قتل كل من هو على وشك الحديث.
