يتقابل مليونير يُدعى (سلاتر كينج) مع النادلة (فريدا) خلال حفل خيري لجمع التبرعات، ويوجه لها الدعوة للذهاب معه في رحلة بعيدة بجزيرة خاصة، ولكن سرعان ما تقع العديد من الأحداث الغير متوقعة هناك.

يبدأ الفيلم بعبارة "أنه عندما ترفرف فراشة بجناحيها في مكان ما، فهي تحدث ريحا تؤدي توابعه إلى هبوب إعصار في مكان آخر بعيد"، (إيفان ) شاب كان يعانى فى طفولته من مشكلة فى الذاكرة، وهى أن بعض الأحداث لا يستطيع تذكرها، حتى وهو تحت تأثير التنويم الإيحائي، وعندما يكبر يكتشف قدرته على تذكر هذه الأحداث بكل دقة، بل يستطيع التعديل فيها، ويبدأ التعديل، فعلا، رغبة منه فى الوصول إلى قلب حبيبته ( كايلي )، وبالفعل يحصل على ذلك، ولكن لاتسير الأمور كما يريد، فيعود لنقطة أخرى من الماضي، كمحاولة للإصلاح، ولكن الأحداث تتمادى في السوء.

بعد قضاء ثمانية أشهر في مصحة عقلية ، يعود مدرس سابق للعيش مع والديه ويحاول التصالح مع زوجته السابقة.
