It all happens in a hospital waiting room. While his young wife has just had a serious accident and is undergoing surgery, the husband relives, in his memory, the reality of their near past, or what he would have liked his marital union to be. At the outset, this young couple took as their model the famous couple from "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" and their line of conduct: complete freedom for everyone, as long as they confide in each other about their adventures.
A trio of seedy gangsters, Gigi, Totor and Jo, manage to snatch a suitcase of diamonds, which they promptly lose. The precious luggage is recovered by Ernest Mamourette, a distracted salesman. The police suspect him of being behind the hold-up and the safe. Gigi reappears under the identity of a certain Countess Olga and expresses her desire to marry Mamourette, who is released from prison, and is drawn into a burglary at the home of the real Countess, who, on the point of committing suicide, is reunited with Ernest, her beloved husband, whom she thought had disappeared.
A brave and talkative wine merchant, Eugène Barbentin drives his son Pierrot out of the family home, because he has given birth to his girlfriend. His wife then reveals to him that he is not Pierrot's father and she flees with her lover. Abandoned, Eugene will be saved by his mother who will restore the situation with energy and determination.
