Podstata prací pod vedením restaurátorského experta Grovera Crispa spočívala v odstraňování jak nedostatků vzniklých při původním vyvolávání duplikační kopie, tak poškození způsobených na tomto materiálu v průběhu let.

Čerstvý podporučík amerického námořnictva Willie Keith (R. Francis) nastoupí během války do služby na lodi Caine. Jeho první dojmy jsou veskrze špatné: toužil získat místo na letadlové lodi nebo bitevním křižníku, a místo toho skončil na oprýskané minolovce, jejíž posádka si na disciplínu vůbec nepotrpí.
