Jedenáctiletá Parvana žije se svou milující rodinou v afghánském Kábulu, v roce 2001 plně ovládaném Tálibánem. Doprovází otce při jeho snahách zajistit rodinu, umí číst a psát a dokáže dokonce vyprávět starobylé příběhy, které ji naučil. Ty jí v tomto okouzlujícím snímku o lásce k rodině a ohromné statečnosti malé dívky v přísně mužském světě pomáhají vzdorovat okolní nespravedlnosti. Její otec je totiž brzy neprávem uvězněn. V chlapeckém přestrojení a za pomoci stejně maskované kamarádky se Parvana začíná o rodinu starat sama. Odmítá se přitom vzdát snu, že jednou budou všichni zase pohromadě. V pestrých sekvencích ploškové animace, kontrastujících s digitálně malovaným prostředím hlavní dějové linky, její příběh zrcadlí pohádkové vyprávění o pouti za strašidelným sloním démonem, které Parvana sdílí s bráškou Zakim a kamarádkou Shauziou.

Umělecky laděný "dokument z cest" a současně osobitou meditaci nad životem všech obyvatel naší planety natočil kameraman, scenárista a režisér Ron Fricke, který se podílel také na vzniku slavného dokumentárního snímku Koyaanisqatsi.
