Příběh filmu se odehrává v období po druhé světové válce, kdy je Japonsko na dně svých sil. Jenomže z jaderného spadu Hirošimy a Nagasaki povstává velké monstrum jménem Godzilla, která zaútočí pár týdnů po skončení války a dostane Japonsko ješte do větších problémů. Podaří se zničeným lidem přežít... natož se bránit?
Po sérii jaderných pokusů v Tichomoří se z moře vynořuje zmutovaný tvor, Gojira. Při střetu s civilizací se projeví destruktivní podstata padesátimetrového monstra, vytvořeného nesmyslnou činností člověka. Za cenu osobní objeti mladého vědce je Gojira na konec zničena. Film je obžalobou a přímou reakcí na testy jaderných zbraní, bez ohledu na okolní svět, ale taktéž polemikou mezi zodpovědností vědy, armády a obecnými zájmy obyčejných lidí. Toto dílo je počítáno mezi nejzásadnější díla japonské kinematografie. Svou filozofií a celkovým vyzněním,konflikt vědy a pokroku s morální odpovědností, ho lze přirovnat k dílům K.Čapka, jako jsou Krakatit nebo Bílá nemoc. Další,následující, filmy s Gojirou a jinými monstry, jsou pouze komerční podívanou a s morálním odkazem tohoto filmu nemají zhola nic společného.
Ponorka narazí do plovoucího kusu ledu do kterého byla Godzilla (Gigantis) v předchozím dílu zasypána. Jakmile to zjistí armáda, vyšle proti Godzille rakety a letadla, ale Godzillu to nezastaví a půjde dál na Tokio. Mezitím je nalezen na tropickém ostrově lidoop, kterému místní domorodci říkají King Kong. Poté, co zničí obrovskou chobotnici, je polapen a odvezen z ostrova, protože vědci věří, že on je jedinou nadějí na záchranu Tokia. Godzilla mezitím začne pustošit celé Japonsko a při prvním setkání Konga zažene do města. King Kong tam najde ženu, do které se zamiluje a začne město ničit (s ní v ruce). King Konga nakonec polapí a odvezou ke Godzille. Začne největší souboj nejslavnějších obřích monster.
Druhý díl slavné Godzillí série. V tomto filmu se kromě ničení Tokia musí Godzilla utkat s jejím prvním a nejčastějším protivníkem Anguirem. Konec filmu připravuje půdu pro opravdový souboj titánů Godzilly a King Konga.
Lidstvo nalezne na moři obří vejce a následně ho odveze do Japonska. Od dvou víl se vědci dozvědí, že vejce pochází ze vzdáleného ostrova, kde vládne jistá Mothra. Jakmile se do Tokia vrátí stará známá Godzilla, vědci neváhají a odjedou na ostrov přemluvit Mothru, aby zničila Godzillu. Mothra jim vyhoví a odletí do Tokia zabít Godzillu. Godzilla však Mothru porazí a Japonsko nasadí do boje tanky. Ani ty však Godzillu nezastaví. Víly proto zařídí, aby se z vejce vylíhly larvy Mothry dříve. Stalo se tak a dvě larvy Mothry se vydaly zničit Godzillu. Pomstí svou matku?
Na tropickém ostrově provádí skupina vědců experimenty s ovládáním počasí. Experiment se ale nezdaří a následkem radioaktivity zmutují místní kudlanky v obří kudlanky "Kamacuras". Ty naleznou obří vejce, rozbijí ho a začnou trápit vylíhnuté godzillí mládě Minillu. Na scénu tedy přichází Godzilla přivolána telepatickým voláním svého potomka. Porazí kudlanky a začne Minillu učit jak být strašlivým monstrem. Osmý díl ze série o Godzille je jednoznačně cílen na mladší publikum.
V pořadí páty film ze série o Godzille, přičemž poněkud matoucí může být, že japonský ani anglický název její jméno neobsahuje. Tentokrát Japonsko pustoší King Ghidorah, trojhlavé létající monstrum vylíhnuté z meteoritu. Ve stejnou chvíli spolu bojují Godzilla a Rodan, obří ptakoještěr. Je na Mothře, larvě gigantické můry, aby oba nepřátele přesvědčila, že je lépe spojit síly proti mnohem strašnějšímu monstru Ghidorahovi. Přelomový film, kdy se z Godzilly stává spíše ochránce japonských ostrovů než jejich ničitel. Rovněž filmové zrození King Ghidoraha, aktéra mnoha jiných "kaiju" filmů.
Godzilla se opět musí utkat se zlem. A to s tříhlavým monstrem, kterého chce využít pro své plány na ovládnutí planety - mimozemská civilizace. V pořadí šestý film s Godzillou. Jedna z hlavních inspirací pro "Mars útočí" Tima Burtona.
