Kristen Stewart og Dakota Fanning som begge er kendt fra Twilight-filmene spiller hovedrollerne i denne film om at blive voksen, der med masser af musik fortæller historien om det nyskabende pige-rockband, The Runaways. De falder i kløerne på den legendariske rockimpresario, Kim Fowley, som forvandler rebellerne fra det sydlige Californien til et rockband med voldsom succes. Med imaget som seje tøser og masser af talent bliver bandet hurtigt kendt og det samme gør de to hovedpersoner: Joan Jett er bandets sande rock and roll-sjæl, mens Cherie Curie med sit Bowie-Bardot-udseende er det kælne sexsymbol.
