Efter at have patruljeret gaderne i to år som Batman, og skabt frygt for de kriminelle, er Bruce Wayne nået dybt ind i Gothams skyggefulde underverden. Med kun få betroede allierede – Alfred Pennyworth og Løjnant James Gordon – blandt byens korrupte netværk af embedsmænd og højt profilerede personer, har den sortklædte selvtægtsmand etableret sig selv som den eneste legemliggørelse af hævn blandt sine medborgere. Mange har sammenlignet med salig Tarkovskijs stærkeste film, men Zvjagintsevs værk er mest af alt af en monomentalitet, som vi bedst kender det fra den store russiske litteratur.
