Byens vise mænd råder dem til at rekruttere nogle samuraier - professionelle krigere - der kan beskytte dem mod overfaldene. Det varer ikke længe, før syv meget forskellige samuraier har stillet sig til disposition.

Under en gigantisk, faldefærdig port i udkanten af 1100-tallets Kyoto har en præst, en skovhugger og en dagdriver søgt tilflugt fra den silende regn. Præsten og skovhuggeren har forinden vidnet i en retssag omkring mordet på en mand og voldtægten af hans hustru i en nærliggende skov. Mens de venter på, at vejret skal klare op, diskuterer de tre mænd den sælsomme process, hvor ingen af førstehåndsvidnernes forklaringer syntes at korrespondere med hinanden. Throne of Blood er baseret på Shakespeares skuespil Macbeth, men den er så meget mere end bare en almindelig adaptation af det berømte stykke. Historien udspiller sig i Japan under samuraiernes storhedstid. Vi følger en hærleder, som på grund sin kones magtbegær lader sig overtale til at myrde lederen af den selvsamme klan, som han er medlem af. Den slags forræderi betaler sig sjældent, så der går ikke lang tid, før klanens øvrige divisioner rejser sig mod ham, og det hele bliver en kamp om, hvem der nu skal besidde tronen og bestyre klanen.

Samuraien Manji er blevet overmandet af en massiv flok dusørjægere, men på dødens rand skærer en mystisk troldkarl ham op og sætter hellige blod-orme i hans mave. Manji bliver udødelig, og 50 år senere trækker han stadig med denne gave og forbandelse, da en ung pige opsøger ham for at få hævn over sine myrdede forældre. Da den regerende shoguns bestialske bror, Naritsugu, går over stregen i drab og voldtægter, hyres samuraien Shimada til at gøre en ende på udyret. Shimada samler 13 toptrænede samuraier, der skal op mod overmagten i form af Naritsugus hær bestående af mindst 200 mand. Men Shimada har en plan, der kulminerer i et 50 minutter langt vildt, vanvittigt og visuelt opgør, der overgår alt, hvad man tidligere har set i genren.

Den ensomme vandrer Hanshiro Tsugumo henvender sig til en feudalherre for at få lov at begå harakiri på et værdigt sted, men da feudalherren begynder at tale om en yngre samurai, der henvendte sig tidligere, tager alt en uventet drejning.

Ichi og Yogoro bliver omstændighederne til trods forelskede i hinanden - en kærlighedshistorie der tvinger Isaburo til for første gang i sit liv til at handle mod sin herres befalinger og forsvare sin søn - en beslutning der leder mod alles undergang....

Rødskæg er fuldstændig dedikeret til sine patienter og forlanger en asketisk livsførelse af sine ansatte. I mødet med Rødskæg ændrer Yasumoto langsomt holdning til sine patienter og begynder at engagere sig i deres liv.

Set in the 18th century, the show follows the Shogun Yoshimune, who likes to disguise himself as a low-ranking samurai and go into his capital of Edo to see the life of the common man, as well as to seek out and punish evildoers who would hurt his citizens. He is aided by Magistrate Oo'oka and a vivacious fireman, Tatsugoro, as well as a rotating cast of other recurring characters. Along with Zenigata Heiji and Mito Kōmon, it ranks among the longest-running series in the jidaigeki genre. Like so many other jidaigeki, it falls in the category of kanzen-chōaku, loosely, "rewarding good and punishing evil."

Saigo Takamori, the hero of the Meiji Restoration, was born to a poor, low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain (present day Kagoshima Prefecture). His simple honesty caught the attention of its charismatic feudal lord of Satsuma, Shimazu Nariakira. Nariakira’s assertion that the love of people is what will enrich and strengthen the nation captivated Saigo who took on Nariakira’s secret mission and eventually became a key person for Satsuma. Not a portrait of him survives today and much of his life is a mystery. He is a man who was twice exiled and thrice married. He overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate with exceptional bravery and action. Although he accomplished the restoration, he lost his life in a fight with the new Meiji government.

The 37th NHK Taiga Drama is Tokugawa Yoshinobu. The series focuses on the life of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th and final ruler of the Tokugawa period. Born the seventh son of Lord Nariaki of Mito, Yoshinobu is named shogun when he is just 29 years old. With a wisdom and vision beyond his years, he tries to prolong the life of this 200-year-old dynasty which began with Ieyasu. However, he is unable to forestall the winds of revolution as clans in Choshu, Satsuma and Tosa, with the help of the Imperial Court, clamor for change.

He served Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Chiyo (1557-1617) was his wife, and was known in history for her dedication and devotion to her husband (like Matsu was to Toshiie in Toshiie to Matsu). She is the daughter of a samurai who served the feudal lord Asai.
