Gerry Conlon er en ubetydelig tyv i 70'ernes splittede Belfast, og hans største interesser er at drikke sig fuld og feste, hvilket hans stille og skrøbelige far Giuseppe er meget imod. Da Gerry gør IRA vrede, sender hans far ham til England, hvor hans udskejelser gør, at han er på det forkerte sted på det forkerte tidspunkt. Han er uskyldig, men tvinges til at tilstå terroristers bombeangreb og idømmes livsvarigt fængsel. Den uskyldige Giuseppe bliver også anholdt og fængslet, og i fængslet opdager Gerry langsomt, at faderens tilsyneladende skrøbelighed dækker over en utrolig styrke og klogskab. Sammen med en meget engageret forsvarer beslutter Gerry at få sin uskyld bevist, rense sin fars navn og afsløre sandheden bag en af juraens mest skamfulde begivenheder i nyere tid.

Irland 1920. Det netop overstået valg til det nye irske parlament har givet overvældende støtte til Sinn Fein, med deres ideer om selvstændighed, socialisme og skabelsen af en selvstændig stat. Dette kan den britiske overklasse ikke acceptere, og indsætter 7000 paramilitære styrker, som blev kendt som “black and tans” Damien er netop blevet færdig uddannet som læge, og har fået arbejde i London på et af landets bedste hospitaler. Men da han overvære to episoder af de brutale overgreb som “black and tans” udøver på lokalbefolkningen, ændre han mening og slutter sig til sin bror Teddy, i IRA’s befrielseskamp. IRA vinder frem og briterne giver tilsidst efter og tilbyder irerne en traktat der vil stoppe blodsudgydelserne. Ikke alle er dog enige i at det er frihed man har vundet, og en desperat borgerkrig bryder ud. Damien og Teddy står nu i et kæmpe dilemma som får fatale følger.

Borgerrettighedsforkæmperen Ivan Cooper har travlt med de sidste forberedelser inden starten på en fredelig protestmarch i den nordirske by Derry - bl.a. med at overtale de forskellige grupper på den irsk-katolske side til ikke at lave ballade. I det militære hovedkvarter er stemningen også anspændt. Den britiske øverstkommanderende er opsat på at statuere et eksempel og har udkommanderet ekstra mandskab i form af hårdkogte 'paras' (faldskærmssoldater). Pga. den overvældende militære tilstedeværelse forsøger Cooper at omdirigere demonstrationen. Men en del af demonstranterne fortsætter ad den planlagte rute og ryger dermed lige direkte ind i briternes afspærringer, hvor soldaterne venter med skarpladte våben...
