Hollywood, 1927. På film og i pressens historier elsker Don og Lina hinanden, men han er dødtræt af den selvoptagede og underfrankerede primadonna. Talefilmen er ved at afløse stumfilmen, og feterede stjernepar må omstille sig til de nye forhold. Don er oprindelig sanger, så han klarer sig, mens Lina en stemme så skinger, at et testpublikum får deres livs grin.
