Chris Gardner har en drøm. Hans succes som sælger er begrænset. Han bliver forladt af sin kone, han bliver sparket ud af sin lejlighed, og - værst af alt - han skal samtidig sikre sin femårige søn en tålelig tilværelse. Alligevel kaster han sin ud i at gennemgå en ulønnet uddannelse som mægler, hvor han i konkurrence med tyve andre kandidater kan se frem til én og kun én stilling i firmaet bagefter. Mens han trofast møder op i sin habit på jobbet hver dag, overlever han, som han bedst kan med sin søn, sover på busstationer, på offentlige toiletter og - når de er heldige at få plads - på et herberg for hjemløse. Uden at lade det gå ud over sin søn satser Chris alt på at få sin drøm til at gå i opfyldelse.

Smiling Friends Inc. is a small company whose main purpose is to bring happiness and make people smile. The series follows the day-to-day lives and misadventures of its representatives, the lazy, cynical Charlie, and the cheerful, optimistic Pim, as they try to cheer up and comfort the troubled people who call their company's hotline. They receive seemingly simple requests but the jobs turn out to be more complicated than they seem, making it difficult to bring happiness to the world.

The defeated Kao Jia Yue suddenly comes back home after many years. Many people feel awkward about his return, and hope he will leave soon. His nephew Cheng Yu is the only exception, as he finds Jia Yue different from other adults. Jia Yue realizes everyone, including himself, is struggling in life with so many challenges. His parents have an unhappy marriage, his second brother doesn’t feel he belongs at home, and his third brother is bewildered about his future. However, they continue to stumble and move on in life. Witnessing how everyone works hard to survive, Jia Yue also starts to plan his next step. He thought it was time to carry out his suicide plan…
