Men da han overvære to episoder af de brutale overgreb som “black and tans” udøver på lokalbefolkningen, ændre han mening og slutter sig til sin bror Teddy, i IRA’s befrielseskamp. IRA vinder frem og briterne giver tilsidst efter og tilbyder irerne en traktat der vil stoppe blodsudgydelserne. Ikke alle er dog enige i at det er frihed man har vundet, og en desperat borgerkrig bryder ud. Damien og Teddy står nu i et kæmpe dilemma som får fatale følger.
1990’ernes Dublin er nedsunket i økonomisk krise, da Conors forældre flytter ham fra en komfortabel privatskole til en rå folkeskole i byen, hvor den frembrusende 14-årige starter et band. Han får gode råd fra sin storebror, som har styr på tonerne. Conor begynder at komponere numre, og glambandet finder sin egen lyd. Han skifter navn til Cosmo og overbeviser den mystiske, übercool Raphina om at være med i deres musikvideoer (og forsøger at vinde hendes hjerte undervejs).
Filmen udspiller sig i Irland sidst i 1800-tallet, hvor Albert Nobbs har forklædt sig som en mand og arbejder som butler på Dublins fornemmeste hotel. Det er i en tid, hvor kvinderne undertrykkes af mændene og hendes eneste mulighed for et eksistensgrundlag har været at skabe sig en ny identitet. På hotellet udspiller store og små dramaer sig: I værelserne hvor de velhavende gæster igen og igen vender tilbage, men også i de private gemakker, hvor Albert Nobbs holder sig for sig selv. De faste rutiner gennemspilles dag ud og dag ind. Igennem mere end tyve år har intet syntes at kunne forstyrre spillet, men da en ung maler ankommer til hotellet, er Albert fristet til at lade masken falde.
Først efter faderens død tager den velhavende tidligere rockstjerne Cheyenne (Sean Penn) sig tid til at lære sit ophav at kende - blandt andet indser han omfanget af faderens ydmygelser i Auschwitz. Cheyenne er fast besluttet på at hævne ugerningerne, og han opsporer en tidligere nazi-krigsforbryder til hjertet af USA, hvor han planlægger at konfrontere ham.
