Den årlige Grønsagskonkurrence nærmer sig. Men lige inden den store begivenhed bliver de hellige grønsagsmarker udsat for natligt hærværk af et skummelt bæst. Opfinderen Walter og hans foretagsomme hund Trofast får til opgave at fange monsteret. Men også den ærgerrige Victor sætter alt ind på at gøre det af med dyret, for løsningen af opgaven er forbundet med store hæder og ære.

En bagmand med omlægningsplaner, der snart vil indhylle hønsene i blandede grøntsager og mørdej. Og så en enlig amerikansk hane, der kan flyve og dermed hjælpe hønsene på flugt. Scenen er hermed sat til Nick Parks (Wallace & Gromit) vældig morsomme version af Steve McQueen-klassikeren The Great Escape. Den tyske fangelejr er lavet om til en hønsegård med alt, hvad det medfører af hønset adfærd og næbbet opførsel. Høns er, som de fleste vil vide, ikke specielt modige dyr, så der skal en speciel støbning leder til for at få dem til at vove fjerene og satse alt på den store flugt.
Billy tvinges til at gå til boksning af sin far, selvom han er en elendig slagsbror. En dag, da den arme dreng er til træning, ser han, at de i lokalet ved siden af danser ballet. Billy lader sig overtale til at deltage af balletlærerindens datter. Da Billys far opdager sønnens "umandige" interesse, bliver han rasende, og Billy bliver korporligt fjernet fra øvelokalet. Men lærerinden, der har set Billys talent, giver ikke op.
