Nicholas Van Orton, en selvoptaget finansmand og multimillionær, bor alene i sit enorme slægtspalads i San Francisco. På sin 48 års fødselsdag forvandles hans liv til et mareridt. Broderen Conrad giver ham et gavekort fra en virksomhed, som producerer spil. Nicholas tøver med at anvende gaven, men lader sig overtale, og han indser snart, at dét han har sat i gang, ikke kan stoppes. Nicholas' virkelighed styres nu af spillets regler. En klovnedukke giver ham nøglen til den farlige leg, hvor betingelsen er, at der ikke stilles spørgsmål til, hvad det går ud på.

Han er ung, rig, ser godt ud og kan stort set få, hvad han peger på. Alligevel synes der at mangle noget i hans tilsyneladende perfekte liv. En aften møder han drømmekvinden og hans lykke er gjort, men noget er ikke som det skal være.

Mens deres hævngerrige fangevogter kører sit ondskabsfulde spil, kæmper Jay en bizar kamp for at løse gåden om sin fortid for at redde sin families fremtid.

Politiet finder en række sorte plastiksække med kropsdele, rundt omkring i Seoul. Kropsdelene ikke passer sammen, og det går op for dem at de har at gøre med en seriemorder. En special gruppe bliver nedsat til at løse sagen og Cho (Suk-kyu Han) bliver sat til at lede den. Undervejs i efterforskningen støder de på pigen Su-yeon (Euen-ha Shim). Det viser sig at hun har haft et forhold til alle de myrdede mænd, på forskellige tidspunkter i sit liv. Men hvad er morderen ude på? Kender han Su-yeon? Er hun hans næste offer? eller er det Cho, der langsomt fatter sympati for den skræmte pige?

Den forsumpede Boston kriminalbetjent Joe Parris er suspenderet fra tjenesten for unødig brug af vold. Han har ikke verdens største fanklub, så da en af hans fjender findes brutalt myrdet og Joe har mandens blod på sit tøj, smides han uden videre snart i fængsel. Sagen virker tabt på forhånd, men hans sexede forsvarer Jenny Hudson ser sagen som en mulighed for masser af PR og dermed følgende avancement. Joe løslades mod kaution men samtidig med beviserne hober sig op mod ham, indleder han, med hjælp fra Jenny, sin egen efterforskning, men stærke kræfter ønsker at standse dem permanent.

Chain Letters was a British television game show produced by Tyne Tees. The show was filmed at their City Road studios in Newcastle Upon Tyne and first broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom from 7 September 1987 to 6 July 1990, then again from 2 January 1995 to 25 April 1997. Three contestants competed to win money by changing letters in words to form new words.
