Natsume kann seit seiner frühester Kindheit Yokai (Geisterwesen) sehen. Durch diese besondere Gabe ist Natsume jedoch in der Gesellschaft zu einem Außenseiter geworden, wodurch er auch den Yokai selbst eher zurückhaltend gegenübersteht. Eines Tages erbt er von seiner Großmutter Reiko das "Buch der Freunde", in dem die Namen aller Yokai verzeichnet sind, mit denen diese einen Pakt geschlossen hatte. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt wird Natsume in viele aufregende Abenteuer verwickelt, da die meisten Yokai sehr großes Interesse an diesem Buch haben und mit allen Mitteln versuchen in dessen Besitz zu gelangen. Allen voran Nyanko-sensei, ein Geist in Katzenform, der von Natsume von einem Bann befreit wurde…

Die Sommerferien neigen sich ihrem Ende zu und so richtig ist damit natürlich niemand zufrieden, doch Suguru beschert seinen Freunden noch eine riesige Freude: Er hat einen kostenlosen Trip nach Okinawa gewonnen! Die fünf Schulfreunde der Asahigaoka-Schule sind natürlich sogleich hellauf begeistert und wollen es zum Abschluss der Sommerferien noch einmal so richtig krachen lassen. Gemeinsam mit Hikage, Konomi, ihrer Lehrerin Miyauchi-sensei und der Süßwarenverkäuferin Kaede Kagayama treten sie also die Reise nach Okinawa an und freuen sich auf tolle drei Tage! In Okinawa angekommen, dauert es auch nicht lang, bis Natsumi sich mit Aoi anfreundet, die im Hotel, in dem die Gruppe übernachtet, aushilft.

Pushed by his mother to stop lazing around the house, a Panda searches for a part-time job but has troubling finding one to accommodate his laziness. He soon stumbles upon the Shirokuma Cafe, run by a Polar Bear who is holding interviews for a part-time position with his faithful customer Penguin. Panda applies for the job but fails the interview, with the job instead going to a human girl named Sasako. However, the others soon point Panda towards a part-time job at a nearby zoo.
