Μέλλον. Ο Τόμας ξυπνάει σε έναν ανελκυστήρα κι ενώ θυμάται μονάχα το όνομα του. Βρίσκεται σε έναν κόσμο με 60 παιδιά που έχουν μάθει να επιβιώνουν σε ένα κλειστό περιβάλλον, αρκούμενα στις δικές τους καλλιέργειες και προμήθειες. Ένα νέο αγόρι καταφτάνει κάθε 30 ημέρες. Όλα ξεκίνησαν πριν δύο χρόνια κι όλοι εκεί μέσα προσπαθούν να δραπετεύσουν μέσω ενός λαβύρινθου που τους περιβάλλει. Ενώ κάθε ελπίδα φαίνεται αδιανόητη, φτάνει ένα κορίτσι με ένα μυστηριώδες σημείωμα κι όλα φαντάζουν να αλλάζουν.

Δυο μέρες πριν παντρευτεί ο Doug πηγαίνει στο Λας Βέγκας μαζί με τρεις φίλους του για ένα ξέφρενο εργένικο πάρτι. Την επόμενη μέρα όμως, οι τρεις φίλοι ξυπνούν και κανείς τους δεν θυμάται τίποτα. Το μόνο που ξέρουν είναι ότι για κάποιο λόγο, μια τίγρης βρίσκεται στο μπάνιο τους, ένα μωρό 6 μηνών βρίσκεται στην ντουλάπα της σουίτας που διαμένουν, και το σημαντικότερο... ο Doug ειναι άφαντος! Ο Lenard Shelby φορά ακριβά ευρωπαϊκά κοστούμια, οδηγεί το τελευταίο μοντέλο της Τζάγκουαρ, αλλά ζει σε φτηνά ανώνυμα μοτέλ, πληρώνοντας με ένα παχύ ρολό χαρτονομίσματα. Παρόλο που μοιάζει με επιτυχημένο επιχειρηματία, η μόνη του απασχόληση είναι η αναζήτηση εκδίκησης: πρέπει να εντοπίσει και να τιμωρήσει τον άνθρωπο που βίασε και σκότωσε τη γυναίκα του. Με την αστυνομία να μην ασχολείται με την υπόθεσή του, η απόδοση δικαιοσύνης αποτελεί πλέον το σκοπό της ζωής του. Η δυσκολία στην αναζήτηση του δολοφόνου της γυναίκας του επαυξάνεται από το γεγονός ότι ο Lenard υποφέρει από μια σπάνια και ανίατη μορφή απώλειας μνήμης.

Μια ομάδα τεσσάρων γυναικών (μια βιολόγος, μια ανθρωπολόγος, μια ψυχολόγος και μια τοπογράφος) βρίσκονται σε μια άγνωστη περιοχή, γνωστή ως Περιοχή Χ. Αλλάζοντας τα γεγονότα του παρελθόντος, ευελπιστεί να μεταμορφώσει το παρόν. Όμως, η οδύσσειά του θα είναι οδυνηρή...
