Η πλοκή της ταινίας τοποθετείται χρονικά στο 1995, έντεκα χρόνια μετά τα γεγονότα της πρώτης ταινίας. Ο Τζον Κόνορ, σε ηλικία έντεκα ετών, ζει με τους κηδεμόνες του στο Λος Άντζελες. Η μητέρα του Σάρα Κόνορ, προετοίμαζε τον Τζον ώστε να εκπληρώσει το μελλοντικό του καθήκον. Συνελήφθη ωστόσο, μετά από απόπειρά της να βομβαρδίσει ένα εργοστάσιο με υπολογιστές και στη συνέχεια μεταφέρθηκε σε ψυχιατρική κλινική. Μετά την πρώτη, ανεπιτυχή απόπειρα του υπερυπολογιστή Skynet να εξοντώσει την Σάρα Κόνορ, στέλνει πίσω στο χρόνο έναν νέο, ακόμα πιο εξελιγμένο, σάιμποργκ εξολοθρευτή, τύπου Τ-1000, προκειμένου να εξοντώσει αυτήν τη φορά, τον ίδιο τον Τζον Κόνορ.
