21ος αιώνας. Η Kate συγκατοικεί με τον ηθοποιό αδερφό της στη Νέα Υόρκη. Στον πάνω όροφο μένει ο πρώην της, Stuart, ο οποίος έχει ανακαλύψει μια ρωγμή στο χρόνο κοντά σε μια γέφυρα στο Μπρούκλιν. Πηγαίνει πίσω στον 18ο αιώνα και παίρνει φωτογραφίες. Ο Leopold ζει στο 1870 και σαστίζει μόλις βλέπει τον Stuart με την φωτογραφική του μηχανή. Τον παρακολουθεί και περνώντας μέσα απο τη ρωγμή βρίσκονται και οι δυο στον 21ο αιωνα. Ο Leopold παρόλο που δεν καταλαβαίνει τίποτα απο όσα βλέπει σ` αυτόν τον αιώνα χάρη στην εξυπνάδα του καταφέρνει να ανταποκριθεί στις νέες συνθήκες. Ο ρυθμός της Νέας Υόρκης είναι πολύ γρήγορος γι` αυτόν σε αντίθεση με την Kate που αντιπροσωπεύει αυτον τον τρόπο ζωής και ανεβαίνει πολύ γρήγορα τα σκαλιά της επιτυχίας στον χώρο της διαφήμισης. Όταν θα συναντηθούν θα ερωτευτούν ο ένας τον άλλο. Η Kate σύντομα θα ανακαλύψει πως άλλα είναι αυτά που έχουν σημασία στη ζωή κι οχι το να φτάσει όσο πιο ψηλά γίνεται και να κάνει την πλέον επιτυχημένη καριέρα.

The series was inspired by the 1986 film by Garry Marshall starring Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason also entitled Nothing in Common in which Hanks played David Basner and Gleason protrayed Max Basner. Todd Waring later reprised another Tom Hanks role in a TV sequel to Splash for The Wonderful World of Disney called Splash, Too.

The show was filmed on location in New York in front of a live audience, which was somewhat unique for a show of its genre during the late 1970s, as most sitcoms were typically taped in Hollywood. The show aired from 9 October 1977 until 27 August 1978.

She had just completed her first major motion picture - The Million Dollar Duck for Walt Disney and was about to start on her second film - the screen adaptation of the Neil Simon play Star Spangled Girl which was to be produced and released by Paramount Pictures. Duncan was also signed by Paramount to film a television pilot loosely based on the 1957 film musical Funny Face which they hoped would be picked up by CBS to be part of their 1971–1972 fall television schedule. A pilot was filmed in the spring of 1971 and CBS executives were very enthusiastic. As a result, Duncan was already being touted by the network as the brightest new star of the 1971 fall season.
