Η ιστορία της θαυματουργής εκκένωσης των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων από το Βέλγιο, τη Βρετανία, τον Καναδά και τη Γαλλία, που αποκόπηκαν και περικυκλώθηκαν από τον γερμανικό στρατό στο λιμάνι της Δουνκέρκης μεταξύ 26 Μαΐου και 4 Ιουνίου του 1940, κατά τη διάρκεια του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.
Κατά την διάρκεια των Ναπολεόντειων Πολέμων, ο Τζακ Όμπρεϊ, κυβερνήτης ενός Βρετανικού πλοίου, δέχεται ξαφνική επίθεση από ένα Γαλλικό πολεμικό σκάφος. Παρά τις ζημιές που υπέστη, ο Όμπρεϊ μαζί με τον γιατρό του πλοίου αποφασίζει να κυνηγήσει το εχθρικό σκάφος μέχρι τα πέρατα του κόσμου. Μία δύσκολη αποστολή που μπορεί να ανυψώσει την φήμη του ή να καταστρέψει τελείως τον ίδιο και το πλήρωμά του...
Φθινόπωρο του 1939. Το γερμανικό καταδρομικό Γκραφ Σπέε δείχνει να έχει τον έλεγχο του Ατλαντικού. Μονάχα τους τρεις πρώτους μήνες του μεγάλου πολέμου, έχει βυθίσει εννιά αντίπαλα πλοία. Οι Βρετανοί στέλνουν τον διοικητή της ναυτικής μοίρας Χένρι Χάργουντ με τρία καταδρομικά για να το σταματήσουν. Το Γκραφ Σπέε καταφεύγει στο Μοντεβίδεο της Ουρουγουάης, έχοντας να κάνει επείγουσες επισκευές. Εκεί, στις 13 Δεκεμβρίου του 1939, γίνεται η μεγάλη ναυμαχία.
Όταν οι αρχές μαθαίνουν ότι ο φυλακισμένος πειρατής Γέλοουμπιρντ (Κιτρινογένης) έχει κρύψει κάπου έναν θησαυρό, τον απελευθερώνουν για να τους οδηγήσει σε αυτόν. Το πρώτο που μαθαίνει είναι ότι η σύζυγος του αμέλησε να του πει ότι έχει έναν γιο 20 ετών, την ντροπή της οικογένειας, αφού βγήκε διανοούμενος. Με το βρετανικό ναυτικό κατά πόδας, ο Γέλοουμπιρντ, ο γιος του και μέλη του παλιού πληρώματος του πειρατή ξεκινούν για την ανεύρεση του χρυσού.
Το αντιτορπιλικό πλοίο Τόριν, κατασκευάζεται λίγο πριν την είσοδο της Αγγλίας στον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο κι έχει ως κυβερνήτη του τον καπετάνιο Ε.Β. Κίνρος, ο οποίος είναι ιδιαίτερα αγαπητός από το πλήρωμα. Όταν η Αγγλία μπαίνει στον πόλεμο, το υπερσύγχρονο Τόριν ξεκινάει το ταξίδι του προς άγνωστα νερά και προς διάφορες πολεμικές επιχειρήσεις (όπως για παράδειγμα στη μάχη της Δουνκέρκης). Μετά από μια σειρά επιτυχημένων πολεμικών επιχειρήσεων το Τόριν βυθίζεται από μια τορπίλη στη Μάχη της Κρήτης και οι διασωθέντες απομακρύνονται από το ναυάγιο πάνω σε μια σχεδία. Οι επιβάτες της σχεδίας βλέπουν σε φλας μπακ όλη τους τη ζωή να περνάει μπροστά από τα μάτια τους, μέχρι και τη στιγμή που θα τους περισυλλέξει ένα άλλο αγγλικό καράβι.
