Karmil Berki saarel, kus viikingid ja lohed on põlvkondade vältel olnud lepitamatud vaenlased, eristub Kokutis (Mason Thames) kõigist teistest. Pealik Stoik Suure (Gerard Butler) leidlik, kuid tähelepanuta jäetud poeg trotsib sajanditepikkuseid traditsioone, kui ta sõbruneb kardetud tõugu lohega, kellel paneb nimeks Hambutu. Nende kahe vahel tekkiv side paljastab lohede tõelise olemuse, pannes sellega proovile viikingiühiskonna alustõed. Abiks äge ja ambitsioonikas Astrid (Nico Parker) ning küla veidrikust sepp Molu (Nick Frost) astub Kokutis vastu hirmust ja väärarusaamadest räsitud maailmale ning mis veel raskem, oma isale.
