آپولو کرید، رقیب سابق و دوست فعلی راکی، در مسابقه ای با ضربه ی چپ کوبنده ی بوکسوری غول پیکر از شوروی به نام ایوان دراگو (لوندگرن) بر زمین می افتد و می میرد. راکی نیز عنوان خود را می گذارد تا بتواند در مسابقه ای غیر رسمی با دراگوی آماتور، در خود شوروی شرکت کند.
