داستان این فیلم که مدت کوتاهی قبل از رویدادهای «امیدی تازه» (A New Hope) رخ داده، متمرکز بر گروهی از جاسوس‌های شورشی است که نقشه می‌کشند تا «ستاره مرگ»، سلاح جدید امپراتوری کهکشانی را پیدا کرده و بدزدند...

شورشیان برای گریختن از دشمن خود یعنی امپراتوری گلستیک پایگاه جدیدشان در هوث را ترک می‌کنند. «شاهزاده لیا»، «هان سولو» و C-3P0 فرار می‌کنند و به یک پایگاه قدیمی و خراب پناه می‌برند اما بعداً توسط «لرد دارت ویدر» دستگیر می‌شوند. طی این مدت، «اسکای واکر» و R2-D2 از دستورات جدید «بن کنوبی» پیروی می‌کنند و توسط «یودا» تعلیمات رزمی می‌بینند. آیا اسکای واکر می‌تواند دوستان خود را از چنگال لرد سیاه نجات دهد؟

آخرین قسمت مجموعه (از نظر داستانی). در حالی که «دارت ویدر» مشغول ساختن یک ستاره‌ی مرگ جدید و اصلاح شده در مدار سیاره‌ی «اندور» است، «لوک اسکای واکر» (همیل)، R2D2 و C3PO را با پیغامی برای مذاکره به کاخ «جابا د هات» در سیاره‌ی تاتویین می‌فرستد که «هان سولو» (فورد) را اسیر کرده است...

دنیای آینده. زمین برای جدال در برابر حشرات غول آسایی از سیارات دیگر که به مایه ی تهدیدی جدی بدل شده اند، آماده می شود. «جانی» (وان دین) و «کارمن» (ریچاردز)، هم مدرسه ای های دل باخته ی یک دیگر که از هم جدا شده اند و به ارتش پیوسته اند، دوباره طی علملیات جنگی در فضا یک دیگر را می یابند. خیلی زود جنگ آدم ها و حشره ها شدت می گیرد...

Space Battleship Yamato is a Japanese science fiction anime series featuring an eponymous spacecraft. It is also known to English-speaking audiences as Space Cruiser Yamato; an English-dubbed and heavily edited version of the series was broadcast on North American and Australian television as Star Blazers. The first two seasons of this version were broadcast in Greece in 1981-82 as Διαστημόπλοιο Αργώ. An Italian-language version was also broadcast under the name Star Blazers in Italy, and a Portuguese-language version was successfully shown in Brazil under the title Patrulha Estelar and Viaje a la Ultima Galaxia or Astronave Intrepido in Spain and Latin America. It is a seminal series in the history of anime, marking a turn towards more complex serious works and influencing works such as Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion; Hideaki Anno has ranked Yamato his favorite anime and credited it with sparking his interest in anime. Yamato was the first anime series or movie to win the Seiun Award, a feat not repeated until the 1985 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
