Horizon: An American Saga tutkii vanhan lännen vetovoimaa ja sitä, miten se voitettiin - ja menetettiin - monien verellä, hiellä ja kyynelillä. Se kattaa sisällissodan neljä vuotta, 1861-1865 ja vie katsojat sotaa käyvään maahan tunteikkaalle matkalle, joka koetaan perheiden, ystävien ja vihollisten silmin, jotka kaikki yrittävät nähdä mitä todella tarkoittaa olla Amerikan Yhdysvallat.
Klassisessa lännentarinassa myyttinen muukalainen (James Stewart) ratsastaa kaupunkiin ja ravistelee sen valta-asemia. Todellisuudessa kyseinen muukalainen, William Lockhart, on entinen ratsuväen kapteeni, joka tutkii veljensä murhaa ja etsii tietoja henkilöstä, joka myy kiväärejä apasseille. Lockhart saa kimppuunsa paikallisen karjaparonin (Donald Crisp) sadistisen pojan (Alex Nicol). Hän joutuu napit vastakkain myös paikallisen sheriffin Tom Quigbyn (James Millican) kanssa, joka kehottaa Lockhartia poistumaan kaupungista välttyäkseen pahemmilta ongelmilta. Tapahtumat kulminoituvat traagisiin tulitaisteluihin. Vastapainoksi elokuvassa on myös romanttista jännitettä Lockhartin ja Barbara Waggomanin (Cathy O’Donnell) välillä.
Länteen matkaava mormonikaravaani palkkaa oppaikseen rennot karjapaimenet Travisin ja Sandyn. Matkan varrella karavaani kohtaa kiertävän näyttelijäseurueen, Cleggin roistoklaanin sekä hurjia navajo-intiaaneja. Päänvaivaa Travisille ja Sandylle aiheuttaa myös mormonien kummallinen tapakulttuuri. John Fordin peruswestern tunnetaan Suomessa myös nimellä The Wagonmaster - aavikon sankari.
Amerikan Villin lännen suurimpia myyttejä on, että cowboyt ja valloittajat olivat valkoisia miehiä, kun todellisuudessa suuri osa heistä oli afroamerikkalaisia. Myös Hollywoodin elokuvateollisuus vahvisti tätä myyttiä ja vain harvassa lännenelokuvassa näkyy mustia näyttelijöitä. Ohjelmassa oiotaan usein romantisoitua ja vääristettyä kuvaa villistä lännestä.

The story is about an aging cowboy and his nephew who transport 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming to sell them to the British Army. Compelled to do the right thing, they take the girls with them as they continue their perilous trek across the frontier, followed by a vicious gang of killers sent by the whorehouse madam who originally paid for the girls. Broken Trail weaves together two historical events: the British buying horses in the American West in the late 19th century and Chinese women being transported from the West Coast to the interior to serve as prostitutes.
