Emo munii kookkaan munan ja palaa nääntyneenä mereen syödäkseen itsensä kuntoon. Isäpingviini hautoo munaa jalkojensa välissä. Ylängöllä ei ole mitään, mistä voisi rakentaa pesän. Ainoa suoja on isän oma keho. Äitipingviini palaa ylängölle poikasten kuoriutuessa - jos luoja suo. Kun poikaset ovat kasvaneet tarpeeksi suuriksi koko heimo matkaa meren ääreen ja elämän kiertokulku alkaa alusta.
