Kaikki alkaa ranskalaisesta Lansquenetin maalaiskylästä, missä elämä ei ole muuttunut sataan vuoteen. Pohjoistuuli puhaltaa ja tuo mukanaan rauhalliseen kylään salaperäisen yksinhuoltajaäidin Vianne Rocherin tyttärineen. Vianne perustaa pienen suklaapuodin, jossa myydään Maya-intiaanien resepteillä valmistettuja suklaaherkkuja, jotka herättävät kyläläisten salaiset halut... Uskonnolliset kyläläiset paheksuvat hänen epäsovinnaisia tapojaan, mutta Vianne onnistuu kuitenkin vähitellen sulattamaan heidän sydämiä. Ahdasmielinen pormestari on päättänyt tehdä lopun moisesta moraalittomuudesta, mutta kylään saapuva kulkuri vaikeuttaa hänen ristiretkiään entisestäänkin...
