En Lettonie, on fête dans l'allégresse la nuit la plus courte de l'année. Une poétesse portugaise, deux pompiers anglais et une hôtesse de l'air déchaînée vont être emportés dans ce délire. Un Américain aussi, plutôt bougon, qui débarque à Riga pour retrouver sa demi-sœur. Dès son arrivée, il déteste ce pays de dingues. Mais les gens qu'il rencontre et les péripéties rocambolesques qui s'accumulent sur sa route pourraient le faire changer d'avis.
Filmé entre le 30 juin et 9 juillet 2023 à Riga, Lettonie, le Festival letton de chants et de danse se nourrit d’une tradition de plus d’un siècle et demi. C’est ainsi que tous les cinq ans, chœurs et groupes de danse professionnels et amateurs investissent dix jours durant différents lieux de Riga, de la cathédrale au stade. La soixantaine d’événements à l’affiche réunit plus de 40 000 participants et attire un demi-million de spectateurs. Comme dans les autres pays baltes, cette tradition festive sert à l’affirmation et à la célébration d’une culture nationale que les aléas de l’histoire ont souvent malmenée. Le programme met à l’honneur le riche répertoire choral et chorégraphique du pays, tout en faisant des incursions dans la pop et la musique classique. De courtes interviews et des images donnant à voir l’ambiance sur place permettent en outre de revenir sur l’histoire et de cette manifestation et de mieux comprendre l’importance qu’elle revêt aujourd’hui.
A story about Emīlija Benjamiņa, the “queen of the press” in interwar Latvia, whose wealth and tragic fate have since become folklore. The film’s narrative covers the period from the beginnings of Emīlija’s magazine Atpūta (Recreation), to her arrest and slow demise in a train en route to Siberia. The most prominent clairvoyant of the time - Eugene Fink’s prophecy that Emīlija would die from starvation in a foreign land (which served to be true) weaves through the narrative as a red thread. With this strong woman at the centre of the story, the film shows Latvian society in all its richness and gives the audience the opportunity to meet many well-known historical figures.
