סיפור הסרט מבוסס על כתבה מתוך השבועון "לייף" שעסקה בשוד כושל של סניף בנק בברוקלין. גיבוריו הגרוטסקיים של לומט יוצאים לשדוד בנק בלי לדעת בעצם מה הם צריכים לעשות. אחד השודדים קרוב לפיגור ורעהו עושה זאת כדי לגייס כסף לשם מימון ניתוח שינוי מין לחברו. במזג אוויר לוהט הם נתקעים עם בני ערובה מבלי לדעת מה לעשות עמם, כאשר על הבנק צרים כוחות משטרה רבים, אספסוף צמא דם, וגם מקומם של אמצעי התקשורת אינו נפקד...
