אישידה שויה הוא בריון. או לפחות, הוא היה בריון בעבר. בעת הלימודים בבית הספר היסודי, אישידה וחבריו אמללו את שהותה של חברתם החירשת לכיתה, נישימיה שוקו. לאחר שאימה של נישימיה הבחינה בכך שמשהו לא היה כשורה, עברה נישימיה לבית ספר אחר, וחבריו של אישידה הפילו את כל האשמה בדבר על כתפיו. היוצרות התהפכו ואישידה הפך קורבן בעצמו. גם בהווה המתרחש בעת לימודיו בתיכון, העבר אינו מרפה מאישידה המבודד וחסר החברים. אישידה מחליט לשים קץ לחייו לאחר שיכפר, ולו במעט, על חטאיו. כתוצאה מכך, הוא מעמיד את עצמו במבחן אומץ שרק אדם שאין לו מה להפסיד יעמיד עצמו בו, אך תוכניתו אינה הולכת כמתוכנן. דווקא מניסיון המוות שלא צלח, אישידה מתחיל לחיות את חייו. הוא רוכש את חבריו הראשונים, מציע לנישימיה את הצעת החברות שלה חזר וסירב בעבר, פוגש בפרצופים חדשים וותיקים, וחדל מלהתחמק מההבטה אל פני המציאות הניצבת למולו. זהו סיפורו של גיבור שחטא כמו כולם, אך התמודד עם כך קצת אחרת.
