Priča započinje na Zemlji. Glavni lik Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), vojnik koji još nije pronašao razlog za što bi se borio, regrutiran je za odlazak na planet Pandora u vrijeme kada je svijet na rubu propasti (gotovo ne postoji niti jedan biljni ili životinjski oblik života, a financijski kolaps je zahvatio sve segmente).
