Godina je 1933, doba velike krize u SAD-u. Nezaposlenu Ann Darrow, prisiljenu krasti zbog gladi, iz nevolje spasi filmaš Carl Denham i nagovori je da bude glavna uloga u filmu koji se snima u Aziji. S ekipom krenu brodom prema tajanstvenom Otoku lubanja, koji skriva ostatke drevne civilizacije. Na brodu se scenarist Jack Driscoll zaljubi u Ann. Na otoku Ann uhvate domoroci i žrtvuju je golemom gorili Kongu. Filmska ekipa i posada pokušavaju je spasiti. Ann je isprva užasnuta, no Kong pokazuje nježnost, i ona ga zavoli. Driscoll je izbavi, razbjesnivši Konga koji kreće za njima. Ekipa uspava Konga kloroformom i dovodi ga u New York.
