Film vjerno prikazuje događaje tijekom nevjerojatne bitke kod Dunkirka te evakuacije savezničkih vojnika iz Belgije, Britanije i Francuske koji su bili odsječeni i opkoljeni njemačkom vojskom u Francuskoj od 27. svibnja do 4. lipnja 1940. godine. Evakuacijom je tada spašeno preko 300.000 vojnika.
1805. Napoleon dominira Europom. Samo mu se Engleska odupire. To su doba napoleonskih ratova, a sada su mora i oceani postali ključno i strateško bojište. U Atlantskom oceanu engleski ratni brod Surprise, kojeg je kapetan "Luckyja" Jack Aubrey (Crowe) iznenada napadne neprijateljski ratni brod koji je nadređen njemu. Aubrey tada donosi pamtljivu odluku: usprkos ozbiljnoj šteti koju su pretrpjeli Surprise i njezina vjerna posada, uključujući kirurga Stephena Maturina (Bettany), odluči otploviti, ozbiljno rizikujući, preko dva mora kako bi presreli i uhvatili svog neprijatelja. Finch). Pred neutralnom urugvajskom lukom Montevideo brod je naposljetku okružen lakim naoružanjem opremljenim britanskim krstaricama Exeter i Ajax te novozelandskom krstaricom Achilles.
Nakon što u bitci kod Krete 1941. uništi njemački transportni brod, britanski razarač Torrino postane meta njemačkih zrakoplova. Dok pogođen tone, trojica preživjelih članova posade spas čekaju plutajući u blizini broda pod paljbom njemačkih zrakoplova. Osim mornara Shortyja Blakea (J. Mills), koji se prisjeća privlačne Fredi Lewis (K. Walsh), tu je glavni brodski dočasnik Walter Hardy (B. Miles), koji se sjeća kako se njegova supruga Katherine (J. Carey) hrabro držala tijekom nacističkog bombardiranja Londona. A tu je i satnik Edward Kinross (N. Coward) koji je mislima uz svoju suprugu Alix (C. Johnson) koja skrbi o njihovoj djeci. I Shorty je baš kao i Walter i Edward bio izuzetno privržen razaraču Torrino, i ponosan što ploveći na njemu služi svojoj domovini.
