Egy kis faluban, valamikor a 19. század derekán két család a gyermekeik esküvőjére készül. Mindenki boldog, a két házasulandó fiatalt kivéve. Victor és Victoria az esküvő előestéjén találkoznak először. A menyegzőpróbán Victor belezavarodik a házassági eskü szövegébe, az erdőbe megy gyakorolni a szöveget.
