A csokigyár, amelyről a szegény családban élő Charlie álmodik, borzasztóan titokzatos. Tizenöt éve senki nem látott egyetlen munkást se bemenni, se kijönni, nem látták a csokoládégyáros Willy Wonkát, csak az irtózatos mennyiségű csoki áramlik ki a gyárból. Azután fantasztikus hír röppen világgá: Willy Wonka bejelenti, hogy kinyitja gyára kapuit az öt szerencsés nyertes előtt, aki egy-egy aranyjegyet talál csokoládéja csomagolópapírjában. Charlie is a kevés kiválasztott közé kerül. Találkoznak a titokzatos férfival és arra is fény derül, mi a látogatás megszervezésének igazi célja.
