Hiccup è un giovane vichingo che vive in un villaggio sperduto nel nulla, in una landa fredda, inospitale, con poco da mangiare e soprattutto infestata dai draghi. Tuttavia i vichinghi invece che spostarsi preferiscono combattere, non a caso sono tutti grandi e grossi. Tutti tranne Hiccup, figlio del capo del villaggio, che è secco e inadatto al combattimento. Il ragazzo ha però una spiccata passione per la costruzione di macchinari con cui tenta di uccidere draghi e una conseguente inclinazione per la creazione di problemi...

Hiccup ha preso il posto del padre Stoyck come leader di Berk, nonostante del leader debba ancora trovare la stoffa, mentre Sdentato è il nuovo Alfa, il drago da cui tutti gli altri draghi si lasciano guidare. Uomini e draghi convivono, dunque, felicemente e scomodamente, ma l'utopia ha i giorni contati: Grimmel il Grifagno, assetato killer di Furie Buie, è sulle tracce di Sdentato e ha stretto un patto con i nemici di Hiccup promettendo loro di riportare in gabbia ogni drago in libertà. Non resta che partire, lasciare la propria terra, alla ricerca di quel mondo nascosto di cui vaneggiava Stoyck, per scoprire se si tratti davvero del paradiso dei draghi o soltanto di una leggenda da marinai.

Nel villaggio di Berk ormai i draghi vivono in totale armonia con gli esseri umani, li aiutano e sono integrati perfettamente in tutte le funzioni del villaggio che è ora diventato prospero grazie a questa amicizia. Nelle sue esplorazioni Hiccup però si imbatte in un gruppo di cacciatori di draghi, scoprendo che esiste un rinnegato che sta radunando un esercito di bestie al suo servizio. Informato della cosa, il villaggio decide di dichiarargli guerra ma Hiccup è determinato a parlargli per convincere anche lui della bontà dei draghi. Nel farlo si imbatterà in un mondo e persone che credeva perdute e che si uniranno a lui nel grande ed inevitabile scontro finale.

Shrek, un orco dal cuore d'oro, insieme al suo "destriero" Ciuchino cerca di tornare in possesso della sua palude, ora occupata dai personaggi delle fiabe, i quali sono stati imprigionati dal perfido Lord Farquaad, tiranno della terra di Duloc. L'orco e l'inseparabile asinello devono inoltre darsi da fare per liberare una principessa sottoposta a un sortilegio e tenuta prigioniera in un castello sorvegliato da un drago.

Un'altra avventura ha inizio per il maghetto quattordicenne, che dovrà combattere con il famigerato Lord Voldemort...

Smaug ha deciso di scatenarsi dando fuoco a Pontelagolungo e ai suoi abitanti. In mezzo a tutto ciò Bilbo ha rubato la bramata Arkengemma e deve decidere che farne.

Dopo essersi divisi, sia Hiccup che Sdentato raccontano alle rispettive comunità la storia della loro amicizia, ma presto diventa chiaro che le nuove generazioni di piccoli vichinghi (tra cui i figli di Hiccup) non riescono a capire il legame speciale che c’era una volta tra umani e draghi. Hiccup decide così di celebrare i draghi con una grande festa allo Snoggletog Festival. Questa emozionante idea genererà una serie di inaspettate, esilaranti e avvincenti avventure. Ma non importa quanti guai dovranno affrontare, tutti gli abitanti di Berk si ricorderanno che gli umani e i draghi sono legati per sempre.
