I due sono considerati dalla DDR tra i più importanti intellettuali del regime comunista e sono tenuti in grande considerazione, malgrado in cuor loro Georg e Christa-Maria non siano sempre allineati con la linea del partito. Un giorno il ministro della cultura assiste ad uno spettacolo dell'attrice e se ne innamora. Chiede allora a Gerd Wiesler, uno dei più valorosi agenti della Stasi, di avvicinare la coppia, conoscerla meglio, ed osservare ogni loro spostamento e interesse. Sarà la vita di Gerd ad essere cambiata dal rapporto con lo scrittore.

Turingia, estate 1979. Da oltre due anni le famiglie Strelzyk e Wetzel stanno lavorando a un piano audace: costruire una mongolfiera per fuggire dalla Germania Est. Il pallone aerostatico però si schianta poco prima del confine con la Germania Ovest. La Stasi scopre il tentativo di fuga e apre immediatamente un'indagine, mentre le due famiglie sono costrette a costruire una nuova mongolfiera in fretta e furia. Durante la guerra fredda un alto ufficiale sovietico di stanza a Berlino Est fa sapere ai servizi segreti di voler passare all'Ovest. Della delicata faccenda viene incaricato l'agente segreto inglese Harrry Palmer che organizza la fuga mediante un finto funerale. A destinazione, però, nella bara non si trova il "cadavere" finto dell'ufficiale, ma quello, vero, di un'altra spia.
