Frank vive a Copenhagen dove si guadagna da vivere con piccoli traffici di eroina, circondato da amici che, come lui, sono soltanto piccoli criminali. Un giorno, Milo, un trafficante serbo lo convince ad osare di più e a comprare a credito una grossa partita di eroina. Le cose non vanno però per il verso giusto e la polizia fa irruzione proprio mentre sta piazzando la merce. Frank riesce a fuggire ma non a portare via con sé l'eroina e i soldi e non sa proprio come mettere insieme il denaro che deve a Milo, che nel frattempo sta diventando sempre più impaziente.

Carl Mørck, un ex detective della omicidi costretto a lavorare sui cold case del Dipartimento Q della polizia di Copenaghen, si ritrova a dover far luce sullo strano caso di un messaggio in una bottiglia a lungo dimenticato in una stazione di polizia nella più profonda Scozia. La prima parola del messaggio è "aiuto", scritta in danese e con il sangue. Mørck e la sua squadra realizzano che proveniva da parte di due fratelli, tenuti prigionieri in una darsena in riva al mare. Individuare chi siano i due, capire perché nessuno ne ha denunciato la scomparsa e scoprire se siano ancora vivi, diventeranno i principali obiettivi di Mørck.

La strana coppia di poliziotti formata da Carl Morck e Assad lavora al Dipartimento Q, un reparto che si occupa di casi ormai prossimi all'archiviazione. Coinvolti nella vicenda di Merete, una donna scomparsa cinque anni prima, Carl e Assad si ritrovano ben presto a viaggiare negli angoli più bui della Scandinavia per rintracciare un killer psicopatico. La verità che li attende sarà però ancora peggiore di quella che immaginavano.

Un certo numero di indizi portano ad un gruppo di studenti di un collegio vicino ma il caso è chiuso quando un uomo si dichiara colpevole e viene condannato. In realtà la ragazza è in grande pericolo perché un gruppo di uomini influenti farà tutto il possibile per mantenere il suo silenzio….

Spinto dalla codardia, il detective Carl Mørck spedisce la giovane e inesperta collega Rose nella remota isola danese di Bornholm per rispondere alle ripetute richieste di supporto del suo vecchio collega Christian Habersaat. Durante la cerimonia di pensionamento forzato, però, Christian si uccide, costringendo Rose a indagare nel suo traumatico passato e sul vecchio caso irrisolto di un ragazza trovata morta appesa a un albero.

In un vecchio appartamento di Copenaghen dietro a un finto muro vengono ritrovati tre corpi mummificati, seduti attorno a un tavolo da pranzo con un ulteriore posto a sedere lasciato vuoto. Carl Mørck e Assad del Dipartimento Q devono scoprire l'identità delle mummie e chi è la quarta vittima predestinata. Scoprono così che gli ultimi residenti dell'appartamento erano collegati al famigerato ospedale femminile nell'isola di Sprogø, dove le pazienti venivano sottoposte a sterilizzazione forzata. Gli orrori commessi nella struttura rappresentano una delle pagine più deprecabili nella storia della Danimarca ma ci sono persone pronte a giurare che gli esperimenti che vi si commettevano sono continuati anche nel presente.

Tonny è sopravvissuto al violento pestaggio ad opera di Frank ed è successivamente finito in carcere. Quando esce cerca di reinserirsi nel giro del crimine cercando lavoro presso suo padre, soprannominato Il Duca. Costui è al centro di un giro di auto rubate e non ha mai smesso di disprezzare il figlio. Intanto Tonny apprende che una donna con cui ha avuto rapporti lo ritiene il padre di suo figlio.

Roger è un uomo che ha tutto ciò che si potrebbe desiderare: è il cacciatore di teste più famoso della Norvegia, sposato con la bellissima gallerista Diana e vive in una splendida villa; ha però sempre vissuto al di sopra delle sue possibilità e si è dovuto dare al furto di opere d'arte. Conosce quindi Clas Greve, in possesso di un quadro che permetterebbe a Roger di risolvere tutti i suoi problemi finanziari; anche Greves però sta conducendo un gioco poco pulito e quando Roger si introduce in casa sua per sottrargli il quadro, trova qualcosa che cambierà completamente la sua vita.

Due detective svedesi vengono mandati in un paesino della Norvegia per aiutare la polizia locale a risolvere un caso di omicidio. Per nascondere l'incidente il detective accusa del delitto il sospetto assassino in fuga. Ma l'uomo ha visto tutto e baratta il suo silenzio con quello del poliziotto.
