Una coppia di americani si reca a Porto Rico per finalizzare l'adozione di Nina, una bambina orfana haitiana di sette anni. Gli eventi, però, prendono una brutta piega quando una notte Nina scompare dalla sua camera d'albergo. I due americani nell'arco di breve tempo si ritroveranno al centro di una rete sconcertante di bugie e confusione, che rivelerà aspetti sconosciuti del loro rapporto e sorprendenti conseguenze.
Un astuto attivista organizza, con l'aiuto dei suoi complici, ad una bisca clandestina dotata di una roulette truccata che frutta quattrini a palate. Tra i tre, scoppia una rissa che mina alla base l'illecito sodalizio. Alla crisi del trio malavitoso si aggiunge l'ostilità del racket del gioco d'azzardo a cui l'attività della bisca dà sempre più fastidio.
