In un futuro prossimo, la vita normale sulla Terra sarà decimata. Paul e i suoi due figli, Thomas e Joseph, vivono una vita a metà: tranquillità di giorno e tormento di notte. Ogni notte, dopo il tramonto, affrontano gli attacchi implacabili di un male misterioso e violento. Un giorno, quando Thomas non torna a casa prima del tramonto, Paul deve lasciare la sicurezza della loro fattoria fortificata per trovarlo. Ne consegue una battaglia da incubo che costringe la famiglia a mettere in atto un piano disperato per sopravvivere.

1955. In una cittadina statunitense isolata nel deserto si tiene l'annuale Junior Stargazer, convention di astronomia che accoglie studenti e genitori di tutto il paese, riuniti per partecipare a competizioni scolastiche, ma anche per godersi una vacanza educativa e del meritato riposo.

In un futuro dove una singola società detiene ormai il 90 per cento delle terre emerse, gli esseri umani sono considerati come dei parassiti. La Persona Century (la società in questione) tollera la loro presenza, ma fa della Terra ciò che vuole, distruggendo zone abitate e punendo brutalmente ogni tipo di resistenza. Un esercito, robots e satelliti killer sono gli strumenti repressivi nei confronti dei pochi uomini rimasti sulla superficie della Terra. Diversi gruppi di terroristi e ribelli combattono per la difesa dell’ultimo 10 per cento della terra rimasto ancora libero, fra questo (guarda un pò) c’è la città di Tokyo, dove si svolgeranno le vicende del film, in particolare nella zona di Darkside (appellativo del quartiere Shinjuku). Darkside è anche il misterioso, strano, vagamente Victoriano “protagonista” del nostro anime.

I giovani giapponesi sono troppo esagitati. Per disciplinarli viene emanato il Battle Royale Act: ogni anno una scolaresca viene estratta a sorte e catapultata su un'isola deserta. Sorvegliati dal prof. Takeshi e da un nucleo militare, gli studenti si giocano la "battaglia reale": ognuno riceve un'arma diversa, che sia un bazooka o una pinza per le ciglia, e si dà alla macchia. Scopo del gioco: eliminare tutti gli altri entro tre giorni. Regole: nessuna.

Da millenni tra la razza umana e quella dei mostri del "Lato Oscuro" vi è uno scontro segreto. Dopo infiniti disastri causati da questa guerra, i membri più illuminati delle due razze hanno deciso di stipulare un trattato di pace. Ma ormai il trattato sta per scadere, ed alcuni membri del "lato oscuro" non desiderano che venga rinnovato. Per firmare un nuovo trattato viene richiamato dall'Italia il vecchio Giuseppe Maiato, il più importante ambasciatore della razza umana, l'unico in grado di portare a buon fine la missione. Per proteggere il vecchio dagli attentati di chi non vuole la pace, vengono scelte due esperte guardie del corpo: l'umano Renzaburo Taki e la bellissima Makie, appartenente alla razza del "Lato Oscuro". Le donne del "Lato Oscuro", mostri in sembianze umane, hanno un effetto conturbante sugli uomini: Makie non fa eccezione e Taki si rende presto conto di essersi innamorato di lei.
