Charlot, operaio in un grande complesso industriale, estenuato dal ritmo frenetico di lavoro, perde la ragione. Ricoverato in una casa di cura, viene dimesso qualche tempo dopo per finire però quasi subito in prigione, a causa di una manifestazione di operai nella quale si ritrova casualmente coinvolto. Durante la detenzione, egli concorre, inconsapevole, a sventare una rivolta di detenuti; ciò gli frutta l' immediata scarcerzione. Una volta libero, riprende la sua dura lotta per sopravvivere: gli è di conforto l' amicizia di una giovane orfana, con cui divide fraternamente la propria casetta e quel po' di cibo che riesce a procurarsi. Quando la ragazza trova lavoro in un cabaret e riesce a far assumere anche Charlot, ai due derelitti sembra schiudersi la prospettiva di un futuro migliore. La polizia, venuta a cercare la ragazza per ricondurla all' orfanotrofio, li costringe però a fuggire dalla città per cercare altrove un po' di tranquillità.

1866, Inghilterra vittoriana alternativa. Alla vigilia della prima Esposizione Universale, Ray Steam, figlio di una famiglia di scienziati di Manchester, trascorre giorni e notti a escogitare nuove invenzioni. Ray aspetta con impazienza il ritorno del padre e del nonno, partiti per l'America per proseguire le proprie ricerche. Un giorno il ragazzo riceve una misteriosa sfera metallica inviatagli dal nonno. Ma l'Ohara Foundation vuole impossessarsi della sfera e rapisce Ray portandolo a Londra, nel padiglione della Ohara Foundation. Qui il ragazzo scopre i poteri della sfera: si tratta di un contenitore di vapore compresso ad alta densità, che può generare un'energia di proporzioni incredibili. Ray dovrà impedire in ogni modo che la sfera venga usata per scopi malvagi.

Alla metà del Diciannovesimo secolo l'Europa è in fermento. In Inghilterra, Francia e Germania i lavoratori scendono in piazza per protestare contro le durissime condizioni nelle fabbriche, e gli intellettuali partecipano come possono all'opposizione. Uno di loro, il tedesco Karl Marx, a soli 26 anni è costretto a rifugiarsi a Parigi insieme alla moglie Jenny. Qui Karl conosce un suo coetaneo, Friedrich Engels, che, nonostante provenga da una ricca famiglia di industriali, simpatizza con le sue idee rivoluzionarie. Superate le prime resistenze, fra i due ragazzi nasce una solida amicizia che li porterà a conquistarsi la stima dei capi dei movimenti dei lavoratori. Fino a diventarne leader a loro volta.

Il giovane Etienne è arrivato in una cittadina mineraria del Nord della Francia. L'uomo trova lavoro, al posto di un minatore morto in un incidente, nella squadra di Maheu, padre di cinque figli. Grande produzione francese tratta da un celebre romanzo di Emile Zola. Il risultato però è schematico e deludente. Gérard Depardieu (nel ruolo di Maheu) si salva esclusivamente per doti proprie, ma non basta, da solo, a salvare il film.
