Nella Londra del 1939 l'abilissimo ladro gentiluomo Lassiter (Selleck) viene reclutato dai servizi segreti anglo-americani per sottrarre un'ingente somma in diamanti all'ambasciata tedesca. Il colpo riesce, ma Lassiter vuole tenere i diamanti per sé. E il film prende quota, in equilibrio tra suspense e ironia.
