1944年、ナチス・ドイツに占領されたワルシャワ。妻子がいる男性ステファンはレジスタンスである国内軍に加わるが、友人の妹アラに想いを寄せてしまうように。しばらくしてソ連の赤軍がワルシャワに進撃してくるという情報を得て、同年8月1日、国内軍はドイツ軍に武装蜂起する。だが赤軍の進撃はなく、ドイツ軍の圧倒的な攻撃力を前に劣勢を強いられる。さらに空からの爆撃によってワルシャワの町は徹底的に破壊されていく。

1942年、ナチス・ドイツ占領下のワルシャワで売春婦の惨殺体が発見され、目撃者の証言から3人のナチスの将校の名が容疑者として浮上する。事件を捜査する軍事警察のグラウ少佐は、タンツ、カーレンベルク、そしてガプラーという3人の将校をマークするが、やがてグラウはパリに転属させられるはめに。そして1944年7月、戦局がドイツに不利に傾く中、3人の将校もパリに集結したことから、グラウは捜査を再開する。

'４４年、ソ連軍の進軍近しと判断したロンドンの亡命政府の指令で敢行されたワルシャワ蜂起。しかし２０万もの犠牲を出す壊滅的打撃を受け、レジスタンスたちは地下水道へと逃げ込む。物語は、ほぼ全編、その地下水道の中で出口のない、あるいはあっても出られない緊迫感を持って繰り広げられる。語られる人間ドラマもさることながら、その状況こそが当時のポーランドの姿そのものの暗示であった。脚本のスタビンスキーの実体験に基づく、衝撃的な青春の物語。'５７年カンヌで審査員特別賞に輝いた。
