容姿は冴えないが天才的なセンスをもつ無名のミュージシャンであるウィンスロー・リーチは、誰の後ろ盾もなく自分の曲を懸命に売り込もうとしていた。その最中に無名で駆け出しの女性歌手フェニックスの才能を見出し、ともにその将来を夢見る。だが間を置かず、大手レコード会社「デス・レコード」社長のスワンに曲を奪われ、美しい彼女は身体を奪われかけ、自身は無実の罪で投獄される。獄中でスワンが自分の作品に醜悪なアレンジを施し、大々的に売り出そうとすることを知ったウィンスローは激怒し、脱獄してレコード会社に乱入するが、警官に制止された際、誤ってプレス機に頭を挟まれ、顔と声が潰れてしまう。
アイルランド、ダブリン。毎日のように街角に立ち、古びたギターで歌を歌うストリート・ミュージシャンの男性。そんな彼の前にある時、花売りの若い女性が現われ、矢継ぎ早に話しかけてくる。チェコからの移民である彼女は家政婦の仕事で家族を養いながら、楽器店でピアノを弾かせてもらうことを数少ない楽しみにしていた。女のピアノに心動かされた男は、彼女とのセッションを持ちかける。
