ノルウェーのガイランゲルフィヨルド。広大な山々に囲まれた大自然豊かな世界屈指の景勝地は、日々観光客で賑わっていた。一方、ここは過去に山崩れの大災害が起きた危険な一面もあり、地質学者のクリスチャン(クリストファー・ジョーナー)は、長年この地で地質研究に取り組んでいた。しかし、家族の将来を考え、大手石油会社からオファーを受け入れ、家族と共に都市部へ引っ越す事を決めていた。そして、引っ越し前日、クリスチャンは、住み慣れた愛すべき町での時間を子供たちとゆっくり過ごしていた。しかし、大自然の異変を察知する。直ぐに、大規模な岩盤崩落の前兆だと確信するクリスチャン。そして彼の不安は的中し、ガイランゲルの町に緊急避難警報が発令される。大津波が到達するまでの時間は、わずか１０分…。

老夫婦のジムとヒルダは、イギリスの片田舎で年金生活をおくっていた。しかし、世界情勢は日に日に悪化の一途をたどっていく。ある日、東西陣営による戦争が勃発したことを知ったジムとヒルダは、政府が発行したパンフレットに従い、保存食の用意やシェルターの作成といった準備を始める。 そして突然、ラジオから3分後に核ミサイルが飛来すると告げられる。命からがらシェルターに逃げ込んだジムとヒルダは爆発の被害をかろうじて避けられたが、互いに励まし合いながらも放射線によって蝕まれ、次第に衰弱していく。

1939年9月、7歳の少年ビルはロンドン郊外の映画館で第二次世界大戦の始まりを知る。鉛の兵隊で遊ぶのが好きな彼は「本物」の戦争に胸を躍らせたが、まもなく父クライブが出征、勇ましい気持ちは寂しさに変わる。15歳になるビルの姉は、カナダ兵の恋人とデートを繰り返し、母親と衝突していた。そんなある日、ビル一家は戦火で家を失い、田舎の祖父の家に移り住むことに。そこには、戦時中とは思えないのどかな生活が待っていた・・・
