カリフォルニアの鉱山で掘り出された金を町の銀行へ預けるため、搬送人として元保安官のスティーヴが雇われた。責任重大な任務を受けたスティーヴは、旧知の仲のギルとその若い相棒ヘックを助手に抜擢すると鉱山へ出発。道中立ち寄った家で会った若い娘エルザも、恋人のビリーが鉱山で働いていることから三人と同行することになった。だが一行が鉱山に着いた時、ヘックがエルザをめぐってビリーたちハモンド兄弟と対立してしまい、抗争の火種を作ることに。一方、ギルとヘックは元々計画していた金の強奪に及ぶもスティーヴに見つかり失敗してしまう。そんな中、一行はハモンド兄弟の襲撃に遭う。
