歴史学者であり冒険家のベン・ゲイツは、テンプル騎士団の秘宝の秘密を受け継ぐ一族の末裔。祖父に、秘宝は当時のフリーメイソンらによってイギリスの手に渡らないようにアメリカ建国時に封印されたと聞かされて育ったベンは、大人になってから富豪の冒険家イアン・ハウからトレジャーハントの出資を受ける。ある時、ハントの過程で彼は海泡石のパイプを発見し、「アメリカ独立宣言書」にその秘密が隠されていることを突き止める。

歴史学者ベンのもとに古美術商のウィルキンソンが訪れる。彼がベンに見せたのはリンカーン大統領暗殺事件の犯人ジョン・ウィルクス・ブースの日記の失われた18ページだった。そこにはベンの祖先が暗殺事件に関与していたという記録が残っていた。ベンは、歴史的な遺産に隠された数々の暗号を解読しながら、一族にきせられた汚名を晴らすべく真相の究明に奔走する。
