かつて、“ウォッチメン”と呼ばれる者たちがいた。彼らは＜監視者＞となって世界の重大事件に関わり、人々を見守り続けてきた。だが1977年、政府の施行したキーン条例によりその活動を禁止され、ある者は一線を退き、ある者は密かに活動を続けていくことに。1985年、未だニクソン大統領が権力を振るい、ソ連との核戦争に陥りかねない緊張状態にあるアメリカ。10月、ニューヨークの高層マンションからエドワード・ブレイクという名の男が突き落とされ、無惨に殺された。そして、そのそばには血の付いたスマイルバッジが。スマイルバッジは、かつてブレイクがスーパーヒーロー“コメディアン”として活躍していたときのトレードマークだった。現場に現われた“顔のない男”ロールシャッハは、事件の背後に陰謀の臭いを嗅ぎとり、すぐさま“ウォッチメン”と呼ばれたかつての仲間たちの周辺を独自に調べ始めるのだったが…。

「ベトナムから遠く離れて」など、主に記録映画を活動の場としヌーヴェル・ヴァーグの中でも特異な位置を占める作家C・マルケルが全編スチール・カットで撮った中編SF映画の佳作。人類が絶滅した未来からその原因となった出来事を探るため過去にタイムトラベルした男は一人の女性と知り合う。何故か見覚えのあるその女性と行動を共にするうち、彼は幼いころ飛行場で彼女を見たことを思い出す。二人はやがて全ての出来事の根源となる飛行場へとたどり着くのだが……。
