Filmo siužetas II pasaulinio karo pradžioje vokiečių alpinistų (jų tarpe ir garsus alpinistas Hainrichas Hareris) ekspedicija išvyksta į britų Indiją. Tačiau britams paskelbus karą nacistinei Vokietijai, ekspedicijos dalyviai suimami ir uždaromi į kalėjimą. Po keleto nesėkmingų bandymų Hareris su keliais kitais kaliniais pasprunka. Jis atsiskiria nuo kitų ir per Himalajus traukia į Tibetą. Prie jo prisijungia ir Pėteris Aufšnaiteris. Po alinančios kelionės, keliautojai galiausiai pasiekia uždraustąjį miestą – Lasą. Čia jie maloniai priimami ne tik vietinių gyventojų, bet ir valdžios atstovų. Tibetą valdo dar nedidelis berniukas – Dalai Lama XIV (Kundunas). Jis labai susidomi atvykėliais ir Hareris tampa jo mokytoju ir draugu. Tačiau Kinijoje valdžią paima komunistai ir reiškia pretenzijas į Tibeto žemes. Jie visiškai ignoruoja Tibeto kultūrą, naikina šventyklas ir žudo gyventojus.

Auksiniu berniuku pramintas vaikas teroristų pagrobiamas iš Tibeto šventyklos. Jo ieškoti susiruošia privatus detektyvas, kurio specializacija – dingę vaikai. Tačiau šis berniukas ne šiaip vaikas, jis pasižymi mistinėmis galiomis, kurios gali išgelbėti pasaulį nuo demonų.
