Istorija apie astronautą, kurio laivas po ilgos kosminės kelionės patiria katastrofą ir atsiduria tolimoje planetoje. Netrukus astronautas supranta, kad ją valdo kalbančių ir mąstančių beždžionių gentis, kuri čia sukūrė sudėtingą civilizaciją. Joje viskas apversta aukštyn kojomis: žmonės yra kriuksinčios primityvios būtybės, laikomos uždarytos tarsi gyvuliai. Kai beždžionių vadas suvokia, jog atvykėlis moka kalbėti, ima jį medžioti, bet kitos beždžionės padeda jam išsigelbėti ir papasakoja planetos atsiradimo istoriją, kurią išgirdus tam pasišiaušia plaukai.

Žemėje dėl “šiltnamio” reiškinio ištirpo visi ledai, patvino upės, ežerai, jūros ir vandenynai. Prasidėjo pasaulinis tvanas. Vienišas keliautojas atvyksta į miestą ant vandens, kur tikisi papildyti skurdžias geriamo vandens ir maisto atsargas. Tačiau gyvenvietę užpuola jūrų plėšikai. Keliautojas išgelbėja mergaitę ir jos mamą. Pasirodo, kad mergytė turi neįprastą tatuiruotę – žamėlapį, nurodantį kelią į išsvajotąją sausumą, kur pilna geriamo vandens, gyvūnų ir augalų… Visi trys išsirengia į rojų, tačiau jiems kelią pastoja plėšikai…
