1940 m. Sicilijos miestelis Castelcuta. Rūpintis sunkiai sergančiu tėvu čia atvyksta mergina vardu Malena. Kai tik ji išeina į gatvę, kiekvienas miestelio vyras nebegali atitraukti akių nuo nuostabaus grožio, o visos moterys paleidžia liežuvius ir skleidžia paskalas. Vos tik pamatęs Maleną, berniukas Renato pirmą kartą gyvenime nesugeba išsiginti nuo užplūdusių keistų jausmų. Jis pradeda sekti savo svajonių merginą, norėdamas išsiaiškinti, kokia yra tikroji Malena, kurios vyras tragiškai žuvo kare.

Daktaras Džonas Klensis (Anthony Hopkinsas) po dukters mirties ir skyrybų su žmona dvejus metus gyveno atsiskyręs nuo pasaulio. Dėl savo ypatingų gebėjimų Džonas sulaukia pagalbos prašymo iš FTB. Buvęs jo kolega agentas Džo niekaip negali išnarplioti žudiko maniako schemų. Džonas nenori nė girdėti apie bylą, tačiau kai jį aplanko lemtinga vizija, persigalvoja. Išskirtinė gydytojo intuicija parodo, kad nusikaltimus vykdo Čarlzas Ambrozas (Colinas Farrellas), tačiau jo sugauti taip lengvai nepavyks, nes nusikaltėlis irgi turi išskirtinių galių, ir jo vizijos smarkiai lenkia gydytojo regėjimus. Nors kova nebus lygi, daktaras Džonas ir FTB agentas Džo pasiryžę neleisti žudikui netrukdomam daryti nusikaltimus.

Nuo to laiko, kai Matas pirmą kartą mato Lizą, tai tampa jo apsėstu. Ji eina priešais parduotuvės, kurioje dirba Čikagos Wicker Park kaimynystėje, langą, ir jis yra užsikabinęs; ji seka paskui jį, jie susitinka ir netrukus įsimyli. Viskas jų santykiuose atrodo tobula, kol vieną dieną ji dingsta be pėdsakų.

Biografinė drama supažindina su 1970-ųjų JAV televizijos laidų vedėju Chacku Barrisu, kuris gyveno dvejopą gyvenimą - buvo ne tik televizijos laidų prodiuseris, bet ir samdomas žudikas, vykdė (o gal ne...) slaptas CŽV užduotis. Chuckas Barris parašė autobiografinę knygą , kurioje lyg tarp kitko prisipažino nužudęs 33 žmones. Tuo nepatikėjo nei artimiausi bičiuliai, nei kolegos. Iki šiol nėra tikrai žinoma, ar CŽV agentai tikrai buvo užverbavę TV žvaigždę, ar jis pats sugalvojo šią skandalingą istoriją. Kaip atskirti realybę nuo prasimanymo? Gal jis pats išsigalvojo neegzistuojančius herojus, gal jį kankino haliucinacijos.
